5/25/2010 - Memorial Day Weekend Alabama Aviation Events
Without a doubt, this month topped them all in both quantity and quality Alabama aviation events. Take a Memorial weekend break and catch the last but not least of outstanding May aviation activities. Remember to celebrate our patriots, men and women of the United States military, who gave their life for the freedom we cherish.
- Since the late 1950's the 1,200 soldiers of the U.S. 3rd Infantry Brigade place small American flags at each of the 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery on the Thursday before Memorial Day. They then patrol the cemetery 24 hours a day during the Memorial Day weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing.-
The 33rd Annual Hot-Air Balloon Classic and Rally attracting 60 pilots is held every Memorial Day Holiday Weekend May 29-31 at Point Mallard Park in Decatur, Alabama. This Festival offers free admission, and is nationally recognized for having a family friendly venue with great activities and experiences. Included during the event is an Antique Car Show, Southland Flywheeler's Antique Tractor Show, and "Decatur Art Guild" Arts and Crafts Exhibition. Shelby County EAA 825 is sponsoring a Young Eagles event on Saturday, May 29, for kids 8 thru 17 to fly FREE at the Shelby County Airport -EET. Flights donated by EAA volunteers will be from 0900-1300. A hot dog lunch will be available.
The Annual Memorial Day Weekend Tuskegee Airmen Fly In will be held May 28-30, 2010 at historic Moton Field, Tuskegee. Sponsored by Negro Airmen International and the City of Tuskegee, the Fly-In is open to the public and features original Tuskegee Airmen of WWII, historic aircraft, military fly-bys, aerobatics, exhibits, vendors, food, and fun.
